Christopher Hitchens Undergoing Chemotherapy

I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice."

I wish the Hitch all the best.

This is much I disagree about with Hitchens, but I appreciate his intellect, and enjoy his take on the world. I wish him the best as well.

I used to get irritated at him in appearances with other people in what was supposed to be debates on various issues. He doesn't want to give anybody else a word in edgewise, excessively rude almost without fail. But, I do enjoy his writing. His rant about Mother Theresa was almost LOL funny. I too wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Fine photo. I'll let it end at that. Fine photo. There's something else I'm dying to say. Fine photo. But I'm trying to be good, not snarky. Fine photo. So I'll just let it go. Fine photo.

I've met Hitchens personally and conversed at some length. He smoked incessantly, and it's no surprise that his esophagus is paying the price.

I regret to say that he is one of the most unlikeable people in the English-speaking world. Of course, he doesn't care, which for him is a source of intellectual integrity. Hitchens has a powerful, unorthodox mind and is one of the few MSM types who speaks and writes forthrightly and unapologetically about his atheism. Even more important, if the family I met is any evidence, he's a loving and caring father.

Esophageal cancer is typically not diagnosed until in an advanced stage, meaning that a cure is unlikely (although remission is still possible). Since Hitchens smokes, he probably has squamous cell instead of adenocarcinoma. His chances come down to stage, size of tumor, and general health.

PT, I thought Hitchens was joking about Mother Teresa. He set me straight in a hurry.

Definitely one of those people who puts great stock in his own opinion and little in anyone else's. But, as I say, that helps make him intellectually honest, two words that together or separately are in short supply among today's commentariat.

K-

He certainly puts new meaning in the phrase "sucking all the oxygen out of the room". He's brutal in a debate. He would have Attila The Hun cringing in fear.

I knew he wasn't joking about Mother Theresa. I just thought it was funny, probably out of anticipation of the reaction more than what he was saying being humorous, if that makes any sense. I find humor in ways most people probably don't.

I wish your friend all the best. He is indeed brilliant.

Hitch's drinking and smoking finally got to him. I heard he was taken off an airplane in a stretcher, a few weeks ago.

I used to admire him quite a bit. Lately I find him trite. Actually he is a binary thinker. He either fawns over something, or hates it. As a Marxist and dialectician, for example I'd say religion is both good and bad, and at the same time. He claims to be Marxist, and uses static words like good and bad.

Earlier I posted him debating Robert Service on Trotsky. He did terrible there.

I read him weekly at Slate, and wish him well. I'd even admit I was influenced by him at times.

Have you got a problem?

Unorthodox? WTF. The man was/is a freak'n pro-war, pro-imperalist, hack for the anglo ruling class.

Witty and stinging? One could say so.

About his fixation on Mother Tereasa: how many homeless beggers and limbless children has this man ever helped.

More likely, his cheerleadiing US imperialism in the ME created hundreds of immiserated and mangled human beings.

Geez, you 'lefties' are complete pussies. Get your facts and priorities straight. Put on your critical thinking caps.

Chomsky punked this hack long ago, and will most likely out-live this fucker.

Hey, there is a God. LOL

Suffer you ass-kissers. Have a good cry when old Hitch gives up the ghost.

I will toast the fucker--meaning that I will throw some gas on his corpse and take a big swig of Jack fucking Daniels to celebrate the death of another ruling class hack.

Ren, you are a freaking pussy so much of the time.

Please don't tell me that you listen to Prairie Home Companion. That would hurt. But so does truth.

You can bet OW thinks Hitch is cool.

To Iraq, with the whole lot of you intellectual stoodges.

Ok, the above post was a wee bit acerbic.

A slave gets like that sometimes--revolting, that is.

Ren's not a 'pussy'--or, I guess I should use the less patriarchical 'woosy'. Wimps that idolize ruling class, establishment 'intellectuals' need not be equated with female genitalia, or, rather, the patriarchical slang that refers to that part of female anatomy.

However, it was painful reading all the meek-lefty 'get-well-soon' wishes directed toward good ole Hitch.

Some of us haven't forgotten the treachery in backing Anglo-Euro imperialism that has left Iraq and its people in ruin.
