Why we are Marxists

Written by Alan Woods
Monday, 13 December 2010

Two decades have passed since Francis Fukuyama published a book entitled The End of History and the Last Man, proclaiming the definitive triumph of market economics and bourgeois democracy. This idea seemed to be confirmed by almost 20 years of soaring markets and virtually uninterrupted economic growth. Politicians, central bankers and Wall Street managers were convinced that they had finally tamed the economic cycle of booms and slumps.

Now, two decades after the fall of the USSR, not one stone upon another remains of the illusions of the bourgeoisie. The world is experiencing the deepest crisis since the 1930s. Faced with a catastrophic situation on a world scale, the bourgeois of the USA, Europe and Japan are in a state of panic. In the 1930s, Trotsky said that the bourgeoisie was “tobogganing to disaster with its eyes closed.” These words are precisely applicable to the present situation. They could have been written yesterday.

What would Alan Woods think about a fifth international as proposed by Hugo Chavez and Michael Albert?

Global justice and environmentalists must be brought into a process.

Merry Christmas. How's the tango lessons coming?

environmentalists must be brought into a process.

Yeah, I agree, but I think I'd better just leave it at that.

renegadei, thanks for message! and tip. Amazed you haven't read Emma G's life. She was a truly extraordinary woman, formerly Russian (Lithuanian) emigre then American. The bravest woman I've ever heard about. As for the Lib Dems here, I think they are a completely different party from the Democrats in US. All our politicians are a disaster, they find it impossible to think about the people - only themselves plus money! Plus ca change! Shall blog today on those nasty supermarkets that want to rule the world. Tpm.

Holiday Greetings

Troutsky: Woods supports the Fifth Int'l. We don't want it to include "anti-imperialists" like Iran or Hezbollah.

Pagan: Tango is a tough nut to crack. You can learn the moves, but its when to apply them that is the problem.

James Bloodworth: Holiday Greetings

Sentinel: Holiday Greetings

Daniel H-G: Holiday Greetings

Anonymous: At least Labour is based on the working class.

Emma Goldman had a profound misunderstanding of Kronstedt. The Russian Archives prove her wrong.

Renegadei, you must be joking! Newlabour (as they like to call themselves) no way support the working classes!! For 13 years they have been traitors to the working classes. Have you checked out their erstwhile leader - Tone Bliar Blair?
Can't say anything against Emma, she was so brave.
Been examining the life of Samuel Barber and his lovely music, and find he is connected, via Gian Carlo Menotti to Scotland (10 miles or so from here.

Sentinel: I still haven't even read Daniel H-G's post. I've disagreed with him as I don't believe religion is a battle of ideas.

I don't care that you know my real name. I care if you expose it, without permission.

Why fight Daniel H-G on my blog? Don't answer.

If a term is about someone's religion, it's not racist. Race and religion are different.

Anonymous: I mean Labour as Tony Benn, Militant Tendency etc.

Even Atheists compromise and use holiday greetings toward others.

DHG is a friend, but not a comrade of mine. I support some of his views, only endorse my comrades.

You need a proper forum to deal with this.
