The serious strategists of US imperialism understand that a military victory in Afghanistan is ruled out. At the same time, Russia, India, China and other powers are manoeuvring to gain advantage from the situation. All this is the result of the reactionary defeat of the 1978 Saur Revolution. Now, however, memories of that period are coming back among the workers and youth, who are seeking an alternative to both the reactionary fundamentalists and the present regime.

It's a bit quiet round here in't it Ren?
My feeling is that misery will continue to play a large part in the modern history of that nation; solutions are thin on the ground, esp. workable ones.
Daniel H-G: Revolution in Iran would help here.
There is secular groups in Afghanistan.
Most honestly it has no characteristic of even a half way functioning state.
Socialism has never worked anywhere its been tried. When it is tried, it does so awful you guys can't admit it was socialism.
Pagan: Beakerkin believes if Cuba was capitalist, it would have productivity equal to modern Spain. Its just a small tropical island.
Where is the capitalist class?
Not sure what 'you guys' means and while we're on the topic of huge generalisations, it is not feasible, with any basic knowledge of political history, to bandy about the idea of socialism when...
a) the person in question is not sure what socialism is and b) the huge raft of nations where it has been practiced, with varying degrees of success, are dismissed out of hand as a matter of principle.
Blinkered thinking serves none of us well.
Marx never even considered poor countries as Cuba, to be socialist. As history tells us, Lenin and Trotsky knew the Soviet Union would fail, if Germany didn't have a revolution.
Cuba is a transitional state, neither capitalist or socialist. It's a nationalized economy, with a Bonapartist government.
Socialism isn't only about economy. It is also about democracy.
A capitalist Cuba, means dismantling the healthcare and educational system.
Why are these reactionaries always going on about Cuba?
Sure, it would occur to Beak to compare it to a populous European state but normals realize that Cuba has achieved goals that haven't been achieved in the Caribbean region.
