GOD REST YE, UNITARIANS

God rest ye, Unitarians, let nothing you dismay;
Remember there’s no evidence
There was a Christmas Day;

When Christ was born is just not known,
No matter what they say,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

Our current Christmas customs come
From Persia and from Greece,
From solstice celebrations of the ancient Middle East.

This whole darn Christmas spiel is just
Another pagan feast,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

There was no star of Bethlehem,
There was no angels’ song;
There couldn’t have been wise men
For the trip would take too long.

The stories in the Bible are historically wrong,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

Tune: God Rest You, Merry Gentlemen
Words: Hymns for the Cerebration of Strife

Have you heard the joke about how God can tell which people are UUs? When you die and begin to rise up you will see two signs. One says, “This way to heaven.” The other says, “This way to a discussion about heaven.” The UUs always take the second road...

I found a bunch more jokes at http://www.uufallston.org/Sermons/Laughing-at-Ourselves.pdf

Cracking post - I do enjoy a good dose of religious cynicism!

Christ was more likely born in the spring, early summer ('keeping watch over their flocks by night' wouldn't have occured in the winter). Like so many things in the modern Christian tradition, Christmas was adopted by the Catholic church to win converts by Pope Constantine. He transferred the solmnety of Sabbath observance to Sunday, because so many of his would be converts worshipped the sun. In fact in the Catholic catechism, it states that there is no biblical authority to make such a change, but the church in its authority made the change (part of the reason Martin Luther pinned his reforms on the door of the church).

Regarding Wise Men, the Star and Angel's song, they can't be proven, nor can they be disproven. I take it on faith that it happened as the bible says, but not as it is currently interpreted.

Merry Christmas!
